The Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF) held their 2017 biennial Commonwealth Local Government Conference (CLGC2017) in Malta 21 -24 November 2017. The biennial conference is the most important event in the CLGF calendar.
CLGC2017 was also the very first conference for the new CLGF Secretary General, Dr Greg Munro and he secured two very important keynote speakers and guests: The Rt Hon Patricia Scotland QC – Secretary General of the Commonwealth and the Rt Hon Helen Clark, the former Prime Minister of New Zealand.
The biennial conference brings together some 500-600 influential local government policy makers, practitioners and others. Delegates and guests include: heads of government, finance ministers, mayors and council leaders, senior officials, and partners from across development agencies, academia, civil society and the corporate and finance policy agendas to help councils and local government organisations throughout the Commonwealth improve how they serve their communities.
With only four months to go Verve was commissioned to step into the breach to ensure that CLGC2017 would be a success despite the loss of a key member of staff. Not only did we deliver a comprehensive event management service, but we provided creative communication support to add real value to this essential biennial conference.
Our event team quickly took charge of the logistical arrangements for this conference, held in Malta and with delegates flying in from all over the Commonwealth. This meant dealing with the intricacies of managing visa requirements for delegates from all over the world entering a European country which sits within the Schengen Agreement, but has no embassies in Commonwealth countries.
Conference organisation included managing and working with CLGF’s conference partners in Malta (Government and Tourist Authority); all delegate management including hotel arrangements; transport to and from hotels to the conference centre and receptions; VIP transport; catering arrangements; delegate registration and checking in; stage set liaison; speaker arrangements for the Prime Minister of Malta – the Hon Dr Joseph Muscat; The Rt Hon Patricia Scotland QC – Secretary General of the Commonwealth and the Rt Hon Helen Clark, ex-Prime Minister of New Zealand.
Logistics also included arrangements for additional conference events including: a two day youth leadership event; launch of the CLGF Women’s Local Government Network held at the Palace of the President of Malta and for receptions at the Residence of the British Ambassador to Malta; the opening drinks’ reception and the Gala dinner.
Verve commissioned a local film crew and stills photographer for the week and set up a CLG2017 YouTube channel. All plenary session speeches were filmed, edited and uploaded to a branded YouTube channel and short clips and vox pops were used for Twitter traffic. Our film crew added value by providing a live link to the stage setting to portray each speaker live on the stage set screen.
We produced an attractive showreel ‘CLGC 2017 MEMORIES‘ and a short video ‘CLGC Round Up Video’ which will also be used in targeted packages to sell CLGC2019 to potential sponsors – a new approach for the client; both to market CLGC 2019 to potential delegates and to send to the 2017 delegates as a record of their time in Malta.
